As a trained music teacher as well as a TL, the above statement gets no arguments from me! In this article by Tom Barnes from the Children's Music Workshop, he outlines why and how music makes us better readers, listeners and communicators. Image: Notes on my heart by Amanda Tipton. A great article on how reading with your children before they go to bed can also help to improve their Maths skills.
A very interesting article on the pros for reading print versions of a book. The author outlines the benefits of having something that is tactile and not backlit for the development of comprehension and vocabulary. Click on the book image below to take you to the article.
Sometimes the things we throw away find a new life as you can see from the musical instruments below that were made from material found on a garbage dump. The orchestra is called the Landfill Harmonic and the difference music has made to the lives of the children that play these instruments is truly inspiring.

October is Cybersafety Security Month so here is some good information about staying safe online for both parents and their children. Two excellent sites to visit are the StopThinkConnect resource guide page and the ThinkUKnow website. They both offer a number of great resources to help children navigate the internet and have fun while being a good digital citizen and staying safe online.
Yesterday we had the children and carers from EVAM (Etablissement Vaudois d'Accueil des Migrants) visit our Primary Library for an afternoon of fun activities. Helped along by our student volunteers, the children spent time drawing, using educational apps on the iPads and reading some of the stories from our collection of French books. Thanks to Ms Smith and Ms Foster for their passion and organization of this activity.

AuthorI am the Primary Teacher Librarian at the International School of Lausanne in Switzerland. I followed my love of books and became a Teacher Librarian over 12 years ago. I am passionate about reading, literacy and technology and see all three as essential skills for students to navigate both the present and the future. My favourite kinds of books are picture books - I just can't read enough of them! I am also a trained music teacher who plays flute and piano and believes music is the fourth essential skill in helping prepare today's young people for the future. Archives
